Find the (i) arithmetic mean and (ii) the median value

Find the  (i) arithmetic mean and (ii) the  median value of the following set of values:

40, 32, 24, 36, 42, 18, 10.

Answer:

·           Arithmetic Mean:

                       
                         =(40+32+24+36+42+18+10) /7 =28.857

                        Therefore, the arithmetic mean is 28.857

 

·           Median value:

o   The given values are: 40, 32, 24, 36, 42, 18, 10.
o   Arranging the given values in ascending order we get: 10,18,24,32,36,40,42
Here, n=7

Therefore, median = [(n+1)/2]th value = [(7+1)/2]th = 8/2th=4th value.

The median value is the 4th value, i.e. 32.
